We continue to have nice sunny days with daytime temps in the 50s. There’s still time to get your windows clean before the cooooold settles upon us. We also have time to wash off the dirt before all of the relatives descend on our homes for Thanksgiving.
You want to impress Aunt Sally and Uncle Joe, clean your windows!
Here’s a great no streak window cleaner that can be mixed together with little effort or time.
In a 32 oz. spray bottle combine:
- 1/4 cup vinegar
- 1/4 cup isopropyl alcohol
- 1 Tbsp cornstarch (the cornstarch reduces streaking)
- 2 cups warm water
- 8-10 drops essential oil of your choice
- Shake well to mix
Be sure to shake well before using each time or the cornstarch could clog up the spray nozzle.
If you are allergic to corn try tapioca or arrowroot for the starch.
Why use a starch?
The starch is used to help prevent streaking. While it looks and feels smooth glass is not really either, not on a microscopic level at least. So when water is on glass it fills the small imperfections on the surface, like puddles in street potholes.
Also, water clings to itself (hydrogen bonding) so water in potholes plus it holding on to itself causes the streaking on mirrors and class.
Starch disrupts the bonding process helping to prevent streaks.
Other ingredients helpful in preventing streaking are dish soap (see our homemade dish soap post) and oils (add a few drops of tea tree oil or lemon oil).
Remember that vinegar erode grout and possible damage marble, be careful using in areas with these surfaces.
