Today we have a recipe for a non-toxic disinfectant.
Disinfectants have been getting some bod press over the past decade or so, some for good reason. Not only does the use of disinfectants make certain bacteria stronger and resistant to antibiotic treatment they themselves can be harmful to our health.
Carbolic acid (phenol) is a common ingredient in household detergents like Lysol, Pine-Sol and Spic-n-Span. It’s also found in mouthwash. Phenol is toxic and has been linked to; respiratory and circulatory system damage, heart damage, liver damage and kidney damage.
Other dangerous chemicals found in household disinfectants include:
- Petroleum solvents
- Butyl cellosolve
Now that we know this happy news let’s make our own non-toxic disinfectant.
In a spray bottle combine:
- 2 cups hot water
- 1 teaspoon washing soda
- 1 teaspoon tea tree
- 2 tablespoons isopropyl alcohol
- 5-10 drops of essential oil for your preferred smell
It’s simple, it’s safe and smells better than the chemicals used in the bad stuff.
